CARE HOME RESIDENT

Helping Hand Hongkong Bank Fouondation Lok Fu Care Home

I'm 107 years old this year, the oldest resident at Lok Fu Care Home under Helping Hand. I came to Hong Kong from Dongguan in the 1940s, right after the war had ended. My family used to farm, and life was very difficult during the war—we rarely had enough to eat. I never learned to read because I didn’t have the chance to attend school. I met my husband through a matchmaker, which was how people met back then. He found a job in Hong Kong, so I came here with him. I’ve always liked living in Hong Kong more. My husband passed away over thirty years ago, but I’m still surrounded by my children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren! They come to visit me every week.”

When we first moved to Hong Kong, my husband got a small boat. I would make boat congee and sweet soups for him to sell to the fishermen. At the time, I was also busy looking after our two daughters. Years later, I started working at a noodle shop, helping to pack noodle cakes to sell. My eldest daughter had to start working when she was just 12—first making watch straps, then working at a garment factory. But now, she’s already 78 years old!

I love chatting with people and never hold grudges. My life has been pretty stable, without too many ups and downs. I admit I can get a bit impatient—I like getting things done quickly, and I’m not fond of waiting around! For decades, I’ve gone out for morning exercise at 5 a.m., and it’s become a lifestyle that’s kept me healthy. I really enjoy living in this care home; it’s comfortable, and I’ve been here at Helping Hand’s facility for over 33 years. They take such good care of us, and I love joining the activities and playing games with my fellow residents. A few years ago, when I turned 100, I even won the bocce championship at the care home!
