How to Claim Your Tax Deduction for Charitable Donations?

Confirm the Charity is an Approved Organisation

Before donating, you can check the Inland Revenue Department’s List of Exempt Charitable Institutions and Trusts, to verify whether your donation qualifies for tax deduction. Helping Hand Association is one of the approved charitable institutions, so every approved donation you make to us is tax-deductible.

Make a Tax-Deductible Donation

You can donate to Helping Hand via our official website using online payment, by cheque, or bank transfer. Please provide your full name and contact details to receive a tax-deductible receipt.

Receive an Official Receipt for Tax Purposes
Helping Hand will issue an official receipt for donations of HK$100 or above. This receipt serves as proof for your tax deduction claim. Please keep the receipt carefully for at least six years, in case the Inland Revenue Department requires verification.

Claim Your Tax Deduction When Filing Tax Return

Attach your donation receipt when completing your annual tax return. Under Hong Kong law, approved charitable donations are tax-deductible, up to 35% of your assessable income. Your generosity not only helps those in need but also entitles you to legitimate tax savings.

Approved Charitable Donation Tax Deduction Limit and Calculation (2025)
  • • The allowable tax deduction amount is based on your net assessable income for the year (income after allowable expenses, depreciation allowances, or profits).
  • • For example, if Mr. H has a net annual income of HKD 448,000, the maximum approved charitable donation deductible is 448,000 × 35% = HKD 156,800.
    • • If Mr. H donates HKD 100,000, the full amount is deductible.
    • • If he donates HKD 200,000, only HKD 156,800 is deductible; the remaining amount can be claimed by his spouse.

Common Online Donation Process Mistakes

1.          Incorrect receipt header, such as using a personal name instead of the company name, which affects the tax deduction application.

2.          Using the company’s credit card for a donation in a personal name, resulting in a mismatch between receipt and tax information.

3.          Forgetting to fill in the required contact information (such as address, phone number, or email), causing the official receipt to be undeliverable.

4.          Neglecting to confirm the completion status of the donation, leading to repeated transactions or multiple payments due to thinking the payment was unsuccessful.
